Chapter 49
"The Buckaroo Family in Denio"

Of all the truly magical moments I have been blessed with during the course of this lifetime, one I will always treasure took place during my one and only stay in Denio, Oregon two decades ago.

In the course of my career-track as an industrious Chiropractor, I had plenty of money but rather limited free time. Every couple months I innately knew I needed to ‘call time out.’ My preferred method to get away from it all was to hop in the airplane and fly to some small remote town in Oregon or Washington for the weekend. Sometimes Debbie joined me, and often I went solo. My research and planning were simplified by looking on the aviation chart which of course depicted all public (and most private) airstrips along with the name and proximity of any neighboring communities.

Although it could hardly be called a community with a population of just 15, Denio fit my ‘R & R standards’ superlatively. The dirt airstrip was adjacent to the ‘motel’ (three trailers with air-conditioning), plus the café was open all day. This meant no cooking and no transportation/shuttle requirements. Located in the southeastern corner of Oregon, the café/store actually straddled the Oregon/Nevada border and as a result also included fifteen slot-machines within the Nevada quadrant.

As with most of my weekend getaways, I flew down Friday after work. Saturday morning after breakfast I went for a local pleasure flight, took a nap after lunch, then spent an hour or so on my mountain-bike in the afternoon. A hot shower and couple Corona Light preceding an early dinner, and I called it a day, a great day!
